Fruit Parfait

Ingredients:

1 cup vanilla low fat yogurt

Your favorite fruit, here are some suggestions:

  • 5 strawberries quartered
  • 1 handful of blueberries
  • 1/2 peach diced
  • 5 blackberries
  • 5 raspberries

1 tbsp granola

1 tbsp honey

Directions:

1. Wash and dry your fruits of choice, for strawberries, use a straw to remove the hull and a strawberry slicer or egg slicer to cut strawberries into slices

3. Put yogurt in a bowl

4. Put fruit on top of yogurt

5. Sprinkle the top with a little bit of granola for a crunch and a touch of honey for sweetness!

7. Some people like to mix the granola, yogurt, and fruit together, but it’s up to you.

8.  Enjoy!

Why can’t I just eat ice cream?

Although ice cream is delicious and you should definitely enjoy it every now and then, yogurt parfaits have much more nutritional value and taste just as good as ice cream too!

Yogurt is a good source of calcium and protein.

– Calcium: a mineral that makes your bones grow strong (so you are less likely to break them)

– Protein: a nutrient that builds and repairs your muscles (so you can grow big and strong)

Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C.

– Vitamin C: a vitamin that boosts the immune system (you will be less likely to get sick)

Blueberries are full of vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber

– Vitamin C: (see above)

– Antioxidants: studies show that antioxidants may help to prevent many diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

– Fiber: a nutrient that helps the digestive tract (it helps you digest your food so you don’t get a stomach ache)

Granola (buy the kind that says “Whole grain” or “Multigrain”) is full of complex sugars

– Complex sugars: the body cannot break these sugars down as quickly, so you will have a steady and long supply of energy instead of a short burst of energy that you get with simple sugars. (You will stay full and have more energy for a longer period of time).

Update after a fun day at Cotswald Elementary:
Many of you were interested in my strawberry slicer. If you would like to get your own, you may click on the image below to order if you wish. As I also mentioned, an egg slicer works as well. Below are links to the products we used in the presentation.
